Defining which Brazilians' favorite animal is is a real cat and dog fight. We bring numbers: dogs win in quantity, since more than 55.9 million dogs live in Brazilian homes, against 25.6 million cats, according to data from Abinpet (Brazilian Association of the Pet Products Industry). 

But felines don't come cheap, and their market segment was the one that grew the most between 2019 and 2020 — more precisely 3.6%, while that of dogs rose 1.5% in the same period, according to the latest survey carried out by Abinpet.

What few people know is that dogs and cats are, in fact, competing for second place in the hearts of Brazilians, as the country's favorite pets are singing and ornamental birds, which represent 40.4 million pets in the country.
