Já Fui Bag: iFood and GreenPlat reuse 124 tons of thermal backpacks from delivery drivers and achieve Zero Landfill goal

Companies use software to track, control, recover and provide environmentally appropriate disposal of 100% from backpacks collected in the country

Project manufactured 8.4 thousand new products and allocated 115 tons of waste to energy recovery

São Paulo, April 2022 – GreenPlat, a software startup responsible for structuring projects for better waste recovery alternatives, joined the iFood, bigger foodtech of Latin America, and Retalhar, company B specialized in reverse logistics of textile materials in creating the Reverse Logistics project for the project “I’ve Been Bag”. The project consists of environmentally appropriate disposal of 100% bags – the thermal bags used by delivery people to transport orders, in order to achieve the goal of Zero Landfill.

“Part of the challenge of this reverse logistics project is to offer the appropriate reuse or disposal of materials, with environmentally appropriate final destination, closing the cycle in a circular economy. With our technology, we were able to map the destination of the bags and consequently offer sustainable alternatives for the backpacks of the app's delivery people”, explains Chicko Sousa, founder and CEO of GreenPlat.

“After a few years of experience with reusing professional uniforms, we were faced with the challenge of proposing alternatives for the circularity of delivery backpacks. Using the upcycling technique and adding inclusive labor, we were able to develop a series of products for the Já Fui Bag line, such as bags and fanny packs, which have great synergy with other iFood initiatives”, says Jonas Lessa, CEO of Retalhar.

O I've Been Bag completes two years and three months of life with great operational gains, the most significant being the achievement of the Zero Landfill goal. “Giving a suitable destination to 100% from the bags of the largest foodtech of Latin America in such a short time is a very significant result, and one that we want to take to other partners so that together we can carry out automated waste management with practicality, reducing costs and prioritizing sustainability”, says Souza.

To date, the I've Been Bag recovered 124 tons of backpacks, of which 4.5 tons were recycled or remanufactured. 8,488 new products were also manufactured and 115 tons of waste were used for energy recovery.

“Combining our objective of accelerating a cleaner production style, managing all stages of the production process, with that of iFood, which has ambitious goals of zero environmental impact, brings many benefits to society”, comments Souza.

André Borges, head of sustainability at iFood, says that the action is part of iFood Regenera, a Foodtech target program. “In this way, we act on two strategic fronts that are also our public commitments to end plastic pollution in delivery and make our operation neutral in carbon emissions by 2025”.

What was supposed to be a customer and supplier relationship is shaping up as a promising partnership to revolutionize the waste management market in the country. Reaching Landfill Zero in just three months demonstrated how a well-structured project with companies concerned about the cause can bring significant returns. Other partners, such as franchises spread across the country, are already in contact with GreenPlat to implement similar projects. The company has even just launched the “Zero Landfill” seal that can be used by companies that achieve it.

“iFood has a firm commitment to sustainability, enabling the correct disposal of our partners’ bags is an essential action to achieve our environmental objectives. The partnership with GreenPlat encourages the desire to deliver more to the environment than we consume from it”, adds André.
