Conceptual and regulatory debates about the future of work on digital platforms

Survey of digital work platforms in Brazil and their regulatory challenges

In this second volume of the collection “Future of Work and Gig Economy: regulatory issues on technology and social protection” we bring together the materials with an emphasis on analyzing the challenges of regulating the gig economy with special attention to the Brazilian context. The starting point of the discussion was the analysis of the scope and application of the term 'gig economy' and the still existing lack of consensus among authors to conceptualize this new work dynamic. Considering the materials collected throughout the research, we present our understanding of the concept and which activities fit this definition. Secondly, we present a (non-exhaustive) survey of digital work platforms operating in Brazil in June 2021. The data was consolidated and analyzed in order to identify points of similarity and divergence in the business model of these platforms, in addition to reflecting the great diversity in the sector.
