iFood is the most well-known and used delivery app in the country

Opinion Box research also reveals the habits of those who order delivery

iFood is the most used delivery app (with 94% preferred) and the best known in the country (96% of responses), points out a survey carried out by Opinion Box in 2023 and based on more than 2,000 interviews with people who make purchases through delivery apps.

Among the most used applications are Rappi (24%), Zé Delivery (23%), Aiqfome (7%) and Cornershop (6%). “iFood is, by far, the most popular app among Brazilian consumers”, reports Opinion Box in the study.

The research shows that iFood was considered the preferred app for ordering meals (85%), market items (50%) and pharmacy items (34%). To order drinks, the favorite was Zé Delivery (63%).

As for consumption habits, the study shows that most people (47%) order something via delivery as often as once a week or once every fifteen days — and a good portion (18%) order it two to three times per week. Most people interviewed (30%) said they spend between R$ 51 and R$ 100 per month on delivery apps.

Why do people order delivery?

A convenience is the biggest motivation to make purchases via delivery: the ease of not having to leave home was cited by 69% of those interviewed.

But gastronomic curiosity also drives most people: 38% said they turn to delivery because of the possibility of eating something they don't know how to prepare and 37% mentioned the opportunity to try dishes they've never tried.

Of course, there is also the group that doesn't want to talk to pots and pans: 23% said they don't like cooking on weekends and 16% said they are too lazy to cook, while 10% likes to order meals because they don't know how to cook.

Maybe that's why Saturday is, by far, the day on which people order delivery the most, with 41% preferred (and followed by Friday, with 24%, and Sunday, with 21%). And evening is 74% respondents' favorite time, with lunch in second place (21%).

What are the most ordered foods in delivery

Snacks and food for other meals are the most requested, with 73% preferred — on iFood, hamburgers, soda and sandwiches reigned supreme in 2022. Then come dinner (51%), lunch (33%), pharmacy items (28%), market shopping (20%) and alcoholic beverages (17%).

According to the research, the biggest attractions for choosing a delivery app are free deliveries (response from 57%), Discount coupons (51%) and ease of use (40%), in addition to the available stores.

However, the cost of delivery can put people off if it is too high: 79% said they have already given up on a purchase because of the delivery fee. Other 52% stated that they give up buying from restaurants or stores that have bad reviews on the apps.

“Restaurants and stores with bad reviews, for example, scare away customers who don’t know them yet,” the research points out. “A bad purchasing or delivery experience can cause the customer to stop using the app itself.”

Finally, when asked how frequently they order delivery compared to 12 months before, 39% said it was the same, 34% said it was higher and 27% said it was lower.

In the following 12 months, 50% think the frequency of consumption will be the same, 34% think it will be higher and 16% think it will be lower.
