Partnership with iFood favors job offers in restaurants, says Fipe

Research developed by FIPE, commissioned by iFood, sought to estimate the impacts brought to the restaurant sector resulting from joining the platform.

Research developed by the Economic Research Institute Foundation (Fipe), commissioned by iFood, sought to estimate the impacts brought to the restaurant sector resulting from joining the platform. The study found that restaurants that registered with iFood generated, on average, 10,472 jobs per month between January 2015 and December 2019, while restaurants that did not join iFood, presented an average loss of 5,676 jobs per month. Therefore, the net balance of these gains and losses is 4,796 jobs created or preserved per month as a result of the iFood platform's performance in the business of restaurants in the country. This number stands out even more when considering the country's economic downturn in the period analyzed.

In greater detail, according to the Fipe study, entitled “Economic impact of iFood on the restaurant sector in Brazilian regions”, during the 60 months evaluated, each iFood partner restaurant contributed, on average, 2.42 jobs (generated or preserved). In turn, establishments that did not join the platform lost, on average, 0.71 jobs. In absolute numbers, the study found that restaurants registered on the platform employed 14 people, on average, while restaurants that never joined the platform employed an average of 11 people.

It is also observed that the average salary of employees in restaurants is lower before they join the platform, with R$ 1,331 compared to R$ 1,457 after joining.

Such findings are indicative of the benefit that the application brings to the restaurant ecosystem and that joining the platform has positively impacted the restaurant sector, contributing both to the creation of jobs and to an increase in the salaries of workers in the sector.
FIPE's work also evaluated the impact of iFood's entry into cities and regions. In total, information from 12 cities was analyzed. The researchers found that the growth rate of jobs in the areas evaluated increases as the number of restaurants that join the iFood platform increases. In other words, the presence of iFood restaurants in the areas positively impacts both the volume of jobs and the growth rate of establishments.

iFood's contribution to GDP
According to the research Socioeconomic Impacts of iFood Operations in Brazil, also from Fipe, iFood generated R$31.8 billion in 2020, equivalent to 0.43% of the national GDP. This volume is projected to have reached R$50.7 billion in 2021 (based on results from the first half of the year).
