5 iFood initiatives to improve traffic safety

iFood invests in education to improve traffic safety in delivery operations; find out about all the initiatives offered to delivery partners.

Traffic safety is one of the most important topics for iFood. But how do we try to improve this?

What is traffic safety?

Firstly, traffic safety is a set of measures and practices that aim to protect lives and prevent accidents on public roads. Therefore, understanding and respecting the rules and adopting responsible behavior behind the wheel are fundamental to ensuring safe traffic.

To achieve this, it is important to adopt vehicle safety measures. Therefore, vehicles must be regularly inspected and maintained appropriately, ensuring the proper functioning of brakes, tires and other essential systems.

Therefore, measures include defensive driving, traffic rules and measures to prevent accidents and deaths.

Why is it important to think about traffic safety?

The main point of traffic safety is to reduce and avoid accidents and ensure that roads are as positive and safe as possible.

In this way, by treating traffic safety as a priority, companies and governments can guarantee the physical integrity of everyone on the street, including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

To achieve this, it is important to raise awareness about the dangers of traffic. It is crucial to educate and inform the population about traffic rules, highlighting the importance of mutual respect.

Who are most responsible for traffic safety?

In traffic there is a simple rule that must be taught in any driving course: the bigger one always takes care of the smaller one.

In other words, larger vehicles are responsible for smaller ones, and everyone is responsible for pedestrians.

5 traffic safety tips

Check out some important traffic tips to avoid accidents:

  1. Keep an eye on traffic: Always looking at what is happening around you is crucial to react quickly to unforeseen situations, such as a pedestrian crossing or a vehicle suddenly braking.
  2. Respect traffic laws: Obeying speed limits, correctly using safety devices, such as seat belts and helmets, and respecting traffic lights and signs are essential actions to avoid accidents.
  3. Avoid distractions while driving: Cell phones, conversations and other distractions can compromise your attention. Therefore, focus on driving the vehicle and avoid activities that divert your focus, reducing the risk of accidents.
  4. Perform regular vehicle maintenance: Regularly checking the condition of the vehicle's brakes, tires, lights and other components helps prevent mechanical failures that can cause accidents.
  5. If you drink do not drive: Drinking and driving don't mix. Therefore, if you drink alcohol, choose to take public transport or a taxi.

H2: iFood actions to raise traffic awareness

Discover the education and training programs offered to delivery partners. Traffic safety is a serious issue for those who work in delivery — and it goes far beyond the Yellow May.

To provide more protection to delivery partners, iFood follows the path of education and awareness so that everyone knows their responsibility to make city traffic safer.

“Our message to delivery drivers is that everyone has an important role in traffic, and that iFood cares about your safety”, says Felipe Resende, business analyst and one of the leaders of iFood Yellow May campaign in 2022.

Check out, below, iFood's five permanent initiatives to increase the protection of delivery partners — all of them are free and available online.

Helmet Angels

This project aimed at preventing accidents, traffic safety and training delivery men and women in first aid is the result of public-private partnerships between iFood and several cities.

Anyone who lives in São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Recife, Rio de Janeiro or Londrina must have already seen one of the 550 bikers wearing white helmets on the streets, a symbol of those who become the Angel in a Helmet.

The training has a theoretical part (40 hours/class) carried out online at iFood Decola. The practical part is taught by the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) and the municipal transit agency, in person, with an average duration of 4 to 5 hours.

Responsive Pedal

Free online course for delivery people who use the company's bicycles iFood Pedal, the electric bike rental plan offered by iFood with Tembici. Delivery men and women receive, via WhatsApp, content about rights and duties when cycling.

In five five-minute classes, they learn about using an electric bike, pedaling safety, health care, Covid-19 prevention and delivery communication (to receive lots of stars on the app). Those who take the course receive, in addition to the certificate, a kit with a portable charger, windproof jacket, personalized bottle and UV protection shirt.

Personal accident insurance

Since 2019, every delivery man or woman has free insurance against personal accidents and permanent disability or accidental death — even before this coverage is required by the Law 14,297 in 2022.

Today, coverage has been expanded and offers protection in the event of temporary injury, funeral assistance, life insurance against Covid-19, as well as specific compensation for delivery women and partners' families.

Delivery of Advantages

This exclusive platform for delivery men and women offers discounts that can reach up to 50% on services such as insurance and maintenance for motorcycles. Furthermore, mechanical defects were the fifth leading cause of traffic accidents in Brazil in 2020. This according to the Atlas of Accidents in Brazilian Traffic.

The program is free and available on the professionals' app. In addition to discounts on maintenance services, the platform offers health and well-being benefits, such as free hiring of Avus.

A health plan that gives access to in-person and telemedicine consultations for reduced prices and discounts of up to 80% when purchasing medicines. In addition, there is a special discount for purchasing dental plans from W Dental.
