Motorcycle fleet increases by 32% in the country

Delivery is one of the factors behind the growth in motorcycle sales in the first half of the year, according to Abraciclo

Every year more people celebrate Motorcyclist Day on July 27th. In the first half of 2022, the number of licensed motorcycle fleet in the country (636,565) increased by 32% compared to the same period in 2021 — the best performance since 2015, according to Abraciclo (Brazilian Association of Manufacturers of Motorcycles, Mopeds, Mopeds, Bicycles and Similar).

“We have a market with an upward trend, with the advancement of delivery and greater use of motorcycles in urban travel, in addition to the increase in fuel prices”, explains Marcos Fermanian, president of Abraciclo.

The association estimates that we will reach the end of 2022 with 1.26 million licensed motorcycles (8.9% more than in 2021). By the end of the year, Brazil should have a fleet of 30.5 million motorcycles. This means that, if this scenario materializes, one in every four vehicles circulating in the country will be motorcycles.

Today, low-displacement motorcycles, widely used by iFood delivery partners and for urban travel, account for 83% on the market. In the first half of the year, more than 100,000 motorcycles in this category were sold, and there is a waiting list of around 30 days to receive them.

So, whoever delivers is also a motorcyclist?

Yes, delivery people are motorcyclists. In the dictionary, the definition is simple: motorcyclist is any person who drives a motorcycle, which includes anyone who does delivery of food, shopping, documents, gifts and whatever else fits in the bag

But among motorcyclists there are also those who use this two-wheeled motorized vehicle to practice sports, to move around the city or for leisure. Therefore, it is a much broader group.

Today Brazil has 35.2 million people qualified to drive motorcycles, according to Abraciclo. The number of Brazilian motorcyclists is significant: it exceeds the population of countries such as Peru, Venezuela, Angola, Australia and Portugal.
Men make up the majority of motorcyclists (76.5%), but women have increased their representation in this universe. From 2012 to now, the increase in their presence was 83.7% — today they are a contingent of 8.3 million motorcyclists. According to Abraciclo, the increase in women riding motorcycles happened because they started to use them as a work tool and source of income.
