New Year: iFood supports the collection of recyclables on the Fortaleza waterfront

Action aims to collect 15 tons of waste from the coast on New Year's Eve in the capital of Ceará and benefit collectors in the region

iFood entered into a partnership with the city of Fortaleza to collect recyclables on Iracema beach during the New Year's Eve events, which will take place on December 30th and 31st.

The forecast is to collect 15 tons of waste that will be sent for recycling — an action of the project Re-cycle, which collects recyclables and is supported by iFood.

The sale of collected materials is expected to generate income of R$ 70 thousand, benefiting collectors in the region. There will be around 50 collectors registered to work directly in supporting waste collection and will receive uniforms and protective equipment suitable for this activity.

“This is part of a journey that we will build together with the city, the city hall and citizens to make Fortaleza a reference city in sustainability. Our project tries to raise awareness and make tangible the fact that an event of this size also leaves several marks on our planet. That's why we're in this partnership to make a city and an event increasingly cleaner”, says Alexandre Lima, sustainability manager at iFood.

What is Re-cycle?

Re-ciclo emerged in September 2022. Its objectives are to promote door-to-door selective collection in homes, bars and restaurants in five neighborhoods in the municipality and reach the mark of 370 tons of recyclables collected by June 2023.

In Re-ciclo, collection is done by electric tricycles driven by collectors from associations selected to work in the project to generate greater social inclusion and increased income for the collectors.

Fortaleza was also, in September, the first city in the country to join the “Guide to a Model City in Waste Management and Recycling”, publication created by iFood in partnership with Manuia Consulting

The result of an immersion in the challenges of recycling waste in Brazil, the guide was prepared based on the Policy and the National Solid Waste Plan (PNRS). The publication became part of the Greener Fortaleza Program, guiding practices such as the management of recyclable waste in large cities, moving towards a model that meets current policy.
