New iFood program brings solar energy to restaurants

Partnership with renewable energy suppliers seeks to reduce the price of the electricity bill for the year by up to 20%

Solar energy production in Brazil is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. By 2031, the forecast is that the share of photovoltaic sources, which convert sunlight into electricity, will jump from the current 7.7% to 17%, said the Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, at the opening of a seminar promoted by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), in May 2022.

Among iFood partners, this change is already starting to happen for restaurants that are adhering to the Better Energy, an initiative of the program Chef Perks and in partnership with the company GoSinapse, to bring solar energy to establishments and reduce their annual electricity costs by up to 20%.

To use this renewable source of energy, restaurants do not need to make any financial investment, nor do works or installation of solar panels. Electricity is produced by a group of generating companies, partners of Melhor Energia in this action, such as Raízen, Energisa, Enerwatt and Plin Energia. On their farms or solar plants, they transform sunlight into energy that is distributed to small, medium or large companies (such as Heineken, Ambev and Lojas Marisa, which are already customers of these generators).

Reduction of electricity costs

“Research carried out by the Vantagens do Chef team showed that electricity consumption is one of the main pain points for restaurants. With this action, iFood facilitates access to cleaner and cheaper energy by bridging the gap between establishments and generating companies”, explains Alexandre Lima, sustainability manager at iFood.

More than 100 restaurants, in 23 states and the Federal District, have already joined the project and together saved around R$ 110 thousand on their electricity bills.

Any partner restaurant foodtech can be register for free with Melhor Energia so that your current consumption is analyzed and discover how to get the biggest possible discount on your bill. The only prerequisite is to have a minimum energy consumption of R$ 500 per month (or R$ 300, in Minas Gerais) and a maximum of R$ 25 thousand.

“We believe that the energy market will undergo major changes in Brazil in the coming years. Melhor Energia arrives to reduce the environmental impact caused by non-renewable energy sources and, at the same time, help restaurants reduce the value of their energy bills”, says Alexandre.
