The legacy of COP 26

Gustavo Vitti, vice-president of people and sustainability at iFood, shows the guidelines that COP 26 brought to build a more sustainable world.

A moment to stop, bring people together and discuss an increasingly urgent issue. The 26th United Nations (UN) climate conference, COP 26, ended last Saturday (13/11).

At this meeting, the world's greatest leaders spoke with a common purpose: find ways out of the environment. Or rather, for ourselves and the next generations. It's challenging. We have mistreated our planet for decades and now we need to make an effort to join forces — often opposing — in favor of a present concern: our future.

When I think about the future, I do see many challenges and remember, of course, the main purpose of iFood: feed the future of the world. It is not, by far, a simple mission to conquer. But at iFood, we dream big and work tirelessly, day after day, to achieve our lofty goals. And one of the most important of them is to eliminate all pollution from our deliveries. We need contribute to saving the planetAfter all, planet Earth is our home and we cannot spare any effort to preserve it.

COP 26 ended with the writing of a text defending the reduction in the use of fossil fuels. Even with the signature of all 200 member countries, some representatives said they expected a more definitive agreement on financing for the poorest nations most affected by climate change.

Main points of the document:

  • Gradual reduction of subsidies for fossil fuels and the use of coal;

  • Rules of the Paris Agreement, especially with regard to carbon market;
  • Countries have committed to investing U$S 100 billion per year until 2025 to finance measures to prevent temperature rises;

The content is far from being unanimous. Was it ideal? No. But we already have big steps to take better care of our home, much better.

After so many discussions that this event brought to light, one conclusion is clear: the urgency of the topic. In this same document, Brazil appears, alongside the United States, China, the European Union, Russia and India, as one of the biggest responsible for the planet's warming.

And we are already suffering – developing countries on a larger scale – from global warming. This process, caused by man's carelessness but which can, and if it depends on us, will be reversed with sustainable actions, compensation and that not-so-secret ingredient: technological innovation.

Here, we are already working on carbon emissions offset, non-polluting modes, electric vehicles, drones, sustainable packaging… There are many paths, and what COP 26 leaves as a legacy is the ability to unite and mobilize for a common good.

Just as the document signed at COP 26 emphasizes: “it is important to mobilize climate financing from all sources” to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement, the main one being to stop the increase in the Earth's average temperature by 1.5ºC.

And a call was made to developed countries: meet the target of financing US$ 100 billion annually by 2025, in addition to emphasizing “transparency in the implementation of its promises”.

We can, we want and we must be better. Technology, innovation and our people will be our allies on this journey, which is urgent. After all, it is our future.

And you, how have you acted in your environment and in your company to make a difference?

Taking care of our environment is part of our delivery.
