Why are paper bags more sustainable?

Paper bags are the sustainable alternative to the plastic ones used in delivery. Do you know how iFood is made? We count here.

Alternative to plastic begins to become popular among restaurants

Paper bags are gaining popularity among restaurants when delivering meals via delivery. “At iFood Shop, sales double every year”, reports Renan Serrano, packaging coordinator at iFood.

Rafael Cohen Cusnir, managing partner of Papeltec, which supplies the paper bags sold at iFood Shop, says that, when it started in this market, eight years ago, the biggest demand came from stores.

Today, the scenario is different. “Restaurant awareness has increased significantly, so much so that 85% of our sales are for delivery. It started with high-end establishments, but today the demand is becoming more popular,” he says.

The main appeal of paper bags is that they are more sustainable than their biggest competitor in this market, plastic bags. In addition to having petroleum derivatives as raw material, plastic is not recyclable and takes a long time to degrade in the environment after disposal.

“Our big dream is that, in the near future, all iFood orders will be delivered using paper bags, eliminating the demand for plastic bags”, comments Renan. The paper model has been available on the iFood Shop since the beginning, in 2018.

But how are paper bags made and why are they more sustainable? We'll tell you below.
