São Paulo, October 10, 2021 – iFood Pedal, a project designed and carried out exclusively for delivery people, completes one year, with the milestone of more than one million bicycle deliveries made through delivery. Due to its success, iFood, the largest foodtech in Latin America, in partnership with Tembici, a leading micromobility company in Latin America, announces the expansion of the initiative to six Brazilian capitals: Recife, Salvador, Brasília, Porto Alegre, in addition to the current São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. More than 2,500 electric bikes will be available in these locations throughout 2022. As a result, the project will be the largest in Latin America with electric bicycles for delivery.

The choice of cities was based on research, listening to delivery drivers and various demand studies. In addition to the bikes, protective equipment will be made available, such as helmets and bags, as well as support points, equipped with water filters, bathrooms, tables, microwaves, cell phone charging points and rest space. Delivery drivers will also continue to rely on Pedal Responsa, a digital course with training and awareness-raising content.

As a difference, electric bicycles bring a great facilitator in everyday life, since the mode has pedal assistance, that is, the motor is activated when the bicycle is pedaled, without accelerator, making the bike lighter. With a speed limited to 25 km/h and a battery with a range of 60km, its brakes and transmission parts carry the seal of renowned companies in the market, providing maximum quality and safety. Furthermore, with a focus on the experience of delivery drivers, iFood constantly invests in technology and other mechanisms that define the delivery radius for each restaurant and identify who is closest, sending biker delivery drivers shorter routes, optimizing their earnings and operating time. displacement.

The initiative, in addition to offering a new option and less effort with the electric mode across the country, also seeks to encourage clean deliveries with the objective of achieving 50% of orders in non-polluting modes by 2025.

“The project was co-created with delivery partners and launched a year ago in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and during this period, it proved sustainable and fully aligned with the operational, environmental and social impact we wanted to achieve. We understand that this model is here to stay because we saw consumers and restaurants served more efficiently and delivery people satisfied, with greater net gains than more traditional modes, such as motorcycles, explains Fernando Martins, Head of Innovation and Logistics at iFood.

1 year of iFood Pedal

iFood Pedal was the first service in the world to offer bicycle rental exclusively for delivery people and was developed in partnership with Tembici and Instituto Aromeiazero. The initiative completed one year of launch, present today in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The pilot project had excellent results during this period, with more than 13 thousand registered couriers and one million orders delivered using shared e-bikes and conventional bikes, avoiding the emission of 271 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. In 2020, iFood Pedal won the “Innovation of the Year” award at the Estadão Mobilidade award.

Tomás Martins, CEO and co-founder of Tembici states that the project meets a very important demand, which has grown rapidly in recent years. “Investing in this mode and promoting bicycle delivery is to directly contribute to smarter and more sustainable cities. The electric bike expands the possibility of daily use as it facilitates longer journeys with different terrains, requiring less effort from those pedaling”, he explains. “We are focused on aligning our governance increasingly with the ESG agenda. In addition to contributing to reducing environmental impacts and reducing carbon emissions, the bicycle has enormous power for social transformation”, he comments.

In addition to being fully aligned with iFood's sustainability goals, such as 100% of neutral deliveries in delivery, iFood Pedal has a social bias that seeks to support workers who want to start using bicycles to work in delivery. And to assist in this process and ensure greater safety for partners, the Pedal Responsa course, carried out in partnership with the Aromeiazero Institute, offers content such as: care and responsibilities when cycling, communication with customers, coronavirus prevention and health. Upon completing the course, the delivery person receives a certificate and a special kit with several useful items for their daily delivery, such as a water bottle, portable cell phone charger, jacket and shirt with UV protection.

iFood Pedal also has Girando Ideias, with socio-educational actions of meetings and dynamics, in person and weekly. Driving is carried out by experienced mentors, focused on dialogue and active listening, with the aim of improving the day-to-day lives of delivery people.

How does iFood Pedal work?

For now, the project is only available in São Paulo (SP) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and to make deliveries with iFood Pedal, interested parties must access the “iFood Pedal” section in the iFood for Delivery app. There, you will find more details about the project, register and choose a plan. The bikes can be used for periods of up to four hours in São Paulo, and up to two hours in Rio de Janeiro, with a monthly (R$34.90) and weekly (R$9.90) plan using a debit, credit or cash card and are exclusive to delivery people. In the case of additional time, a fee is added per time of use. Partner delivery people can also use Tembici's shared bicycles. In addition, everyone who registers will receive a mask and alcohol gel.

Protection

Delivery people who use the modal also have personal accident insurance offered free of charge by iFood in partnership with the insurance company MetLife and the pharmaceutical company MDS, which provides discounts on the purchase of medicines. The initiative covers medical and dental expenses and offers financial guarantees to the family in the event of accidents. The insurance is valid during the period in which partners are logged in to the platform and also during the “return home”, valid for two hours or on a journey of up to 30 kilometers from the location of the last delivery.
